About the business and the role

Burgess Thomson Lawyers is a boutique general practice law firm located in newly renovated offices at 400 Hunter Street in the Newcastle CBD, opposite Newcastle Court House.

Job tasks and responsibilities

Due to exciting growth in the firm, an opportunity has become available for a full-time Practical Legal Training Placement at Burgess Thomson Lawyers.

You will be supervised and mentored by two senior Solicitors, James Thomson and Damian Burgess.

The role includes preparation of documents and working on files for:

  • Conveyancing
  • Leases
  • Wills and deceased estates
  • General commercial advice
  • Litigation

You will also be involved in liaising with clients, other parties, and banks as part of this role.  

You will be trained to work on conveyancing files from inception to completion, including attending property settlements.  You will also be provided with exposure to other general practice legal matters including reception duties, administrative tasks, and file management.

You will gain experience with:

  • LEAP legal software
  • Microsoft Office 2016 (Outlook and Word)
  • Dictaphone typing with BigHand digital dictation
  • Legal file management, handling incoming and outgoing correspondence, and diarising tasks in Outlook for completion
  • Professional client liaison
  • Effective multiple diary management in Outlook
