Working with a centralised team of lawyers in the Legal Office, Legal Counsel advises the executive, academic and administrative units of the University on a broad range of legal issues in a highly regulated environment. Legal Counsel supports management in achieving the University’s strategic objectives through the provision of pragmatic and commercially sensible legal advice, while maintaining independence and objectivity as a legal practitioner.

You will be responsible for the provision of high-quality legal advice to support research and commercialisation opportunities including negotiation of research and commercial contracts, and intellectual property matters. Working in an area of growth for the University, you will have a particular focus on the University’s Research and Innovation endeavours and will provide technical expertise and leadership to enable research, industry engagement and innovation.

What will you do?

  • As a practicing solicitor your duties will include but are not limited to:
  • Provide a range of legal services to University clients, including reviewing, drafting and negotiating research and commercial contracts;
  • Provide expert advice on issues relevant to the University and prepare complex legal documents,; and
  • Advise internal University clients on the legal risks associated with their commercial opportunities and the options available to address these; and
  • Providing outstanding communication and interpersonal skills including the capacity to build relationships and work in an inter-disciplinary environment.

About the role

You will have a minimum of three years’ experience working within a complex and simulating environment. You will have a genuine interest and capacity to work with multiple stakeholders effectively providing sound commercial advice and building meaningful relationships.
Maintaining strong and functional relationships across the institution with key stakeholders, you will work well under pressure, possess the ability to work autonomously and will genuinely appreciate being part of a functional and cohesive team.

Conditions & Benefits

HEW Level 8 $98,680 to $115,126 + 17% super.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Completed Bachelor of Laws;
  • Completed or undertaking NSW Practical Legal Training (PLT);
  • Sound academic record;
  • Some legal experience;
  • Competent research skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; and
  • The ability to work effectively in a team and independently.
