CPD Seminar - Criminal Law

Date and time:
Friday, 25 March 2022, 9:30 pm to 3:45 pm

United Service Club, Watt Street, Newcastle

RSVP: Strictly Monday, 21 March 2022 5:00 pm

DCJ Domestic and Family Violence team has collaborated with local solicitors and Newcastle Law Society to deliver a series of CPD seminars on Friday 25 March 2022, to be held at the United Service Club in Watt Street. His Honour Magistrate Chicken will be providing a keynote address, with the purpose of the day being to encourage the use of services in the pre-sentence phase of the criminal justice system to reduce recidivism.

Local funded services will provide participants with information on how their services can be used to address clients offending behaviour and assist with the task of obtaining better outcomes for clients in terms of mitigation of sentence. Colleagues from Bennett Law will present papers on case law on mental health in sentencing and how to obtain a grant of Legal Aid for psychiatric reports.

More generally, the day will be facilitated by Drew Hamilton and James Janke. Sessions presented are a collaboration of solicitors and specialised services relating to the areas of domestic violence, drug and alcohol, youth support, mental health and homelessness. There will of course also be the opportunity to engage and network with colleagues services over the morning tea and lunch breaks (and maybe even later).

The agenda for the day is attached.   Whilst of course it is a matter for personal assessment, we see no reason why attendance at this seminar would not attract 5 CPD points.

Morning tea and lunch provided.
